Ingredients

Cheeseburger Patties:

  • 6 oz ground beef (80/20 for extra moisture and flavor)

  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (optional for added depth)

  • ½ teaspoon sea salt

  • ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder (optional)

  • 2 slices cheddar cheese (mild or sharp, based on preference)

  • 1 tablespoon bacon grease, lard, or butter (for cooking)

Roasted Sweet Potato Wedges (Optional for Kids):

  • ½ small sweet potato, sliced into wedges

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

  • ½ teaspoon sea salt

  • ¼ teaspoon smoked paprika (optional for extra flavor)

  • Pinch of freshly ground black pepper

Preparation

Prepare the Sweet Potato Wedges (Optional):

  1. Preheat Oven:

    • Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).

  2. Season the Wedges:

    • Slice the sweet potato into wedges.

    • Toss with olive oil, sea salt, smoked paprika, and black pepper.

  3. Roast the Wedges:

    • Arrange the wedges in a single layer on a baking sheet.

    • Roast for 15-18 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown and crispy.

Prepare the Cheeseburger Patties:

  1. Season the Beef:

    • In a bowl, mix ground beef with Worcestershire sauce (if using), sea salt, black pepper, and garlic powder.

    • Form the mixture into 2 equal-sized patties, slightly larger than the size of your cheese slices.

  2. Heat Skillet:

    • Heat a skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat.

    • Add bacon grease, lard, or butter to the skillet.

  3. Cook the Patties:

    • Place the patties in the skillet and cook for 4-5 minutes on the first side until a crust forms.

    • Flip and cook for another 3-4 minutes until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C).

  4. Add the Cheese:

    • During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheddar on each patty.

    • Cover with a lid to allow the cheese to melt.

Assemble and Serve:

  1. Plate the Patties and Wedges:

    • Transfer the cheeseburger patties to a plate.

    • Add the roasted sweet potato wedges (if including) on the side for the kids.

  2. Optional Garnish:

    • Garnish with fresh parsley or a dash of smoked paprika for added color.

Ways to Get Kids Involved:

  • Mix the Ground Beef: Let the kids mix the seasonings into the ground beef using clean hands.

  • Shape the Patties: Allow them to help shape the patties, teaching them basic cooking skills.

  • Season the Sweet Potatoes: Let them toss the sweet potatoes with olive oil and spices before roasting.

  • Add the Cheese: Give kids the task of placing the cheese slices on the patties before melting.

  • Name the Dish: Encourage creativity by letting them name their meal, such as “Super Cheesy Burgers” or “Power Patties.”

Quick and Simple Flavor Boost Options (Optional):

  • Garlic Butter Finish: Melt garlic butter and drizzle it over the patties just before serving.

  • Bacon Crumble Topping: Add crumbled crispy bacon on top of the melted cheese for extra crunch.

  • Avocado Slices on the Side: Serve with fresh avocado slices to add creaminess and healthy fats.

  • Dijon Mustard Drizzle: Add a small drizzle of Dijon mustard over the patties for a tangy bite.

  • Pickle Slices for Crunch: Top the patties with dill pickle slices for a crunchy, salty contrast.
